After finding NJ Republican Senatorial candidate, Kiss & Fly and Bagtelle owner Andrew Unanue's $25,000 in contributions to the RNC, we wondered what contributions great and local chefs and restaurateurs are making outside the kitchen this election cycle through The Huffington Post's Fundrace.
Chefs...
Alice Waters of Chez Panisse, (Berkeley, CA) $2300 to Barack Obama.
Kerry Heffernan of South Gate, $2300 to Hillary Clinton.
Richard Farnabe of Prime Restaurant, $1000 to Hillary Clinton.
Mario Batali of Babbo, $1000 to John Edwards.
Dennis Foy, $500 to Barack Obama.
Sean Connaughton of Bar Milano, $250 to Barack Obama.
People who refer to themselves as restauranteurs...
Danny Meyer of Union Square Cafe, $4600 to Hillary Clinton.
Joseph Smith of Bobby Vans, $4600 to Rudy Giuliani.
Alberta Wright of Jezebel (now closed,) $2700 to Hillary Clinton.
Kenneth Aretsky of Patroon, $2300 to Rudy Giuliani.
Joe Bastianich of Babbo, $2300 to Rudy Giuliani.
Steve Hanson of BR Guest Restaurants, $2300 to Chris Dodd.
Ann Nieporent, $2300 to Hillary Clinton.
Kim Kaufman of Homer's World Famous Maltshop, $2000 to Hillary Clinton.
Deborah Gavito of Counter, $1650 to Hillary Clinton.
Marion Scotto of Fresco, $1000 to Chris Dodd and $1000 to Rudy Giuliani.
Josh Lebowitz of Brother Jimmy's, $1000 to Chris Dodd.
Thomas Wilson of Mas Farmhouse, $225 to Barack Obama.
And people who refer to themselves at restaurateurs...
Jonathan Fireman of Brooklyn Diner, $4600 to Hillary Clinton.
Amy Rubenstein of Peter Luger, $4600 to Hillary Clinton.
Peter Poulakakos of Harry's Steak, $500 to Rudy Giuliani.
Hillary was the big winner with $25,750 and subtracting the Alice Waters contribution, Obama only raised $975 which is in keeping with his ability to raise small donations. Of those already out of the race, Rudy brought in $10,700 mostly from the steakhouse crowd and Chris Dodd $4,300 while John Edwards only managed a single $1,000 contribution from Mario Batali. And we thought David Chang was the only populist!
