Calories that is. In all the discussion about chain restaurants having to post calorie listings we secretly wondered if movie theaters don't also count as eateries. It's not just the popcorn, now these theaters serve nachos and chicken fingers and hot dogs and pretzels and surely the theaters own their concessions. Doesn't the DOH ever go to the movies?
Turns out they do. They've only been to one so far since the rules went into effect, AMC Theatres Kips Bay, and
they do have a Calorie Labeling Violation against them. Of course, looking at their latest inspection - 39 points! - that's the least of their problems, almost double the points of the next highest theater, AMC Theatres Lincoln Square, with 21 points, (where we didn't see calorie listings when we had a matinee day on Friday.)
In general, poor construction, a lack of handwashing facilities, evidence of live mice and a lack of vermin-proofing seem to be flaws
that overlap several AMC Theatres in the city. Oddly, we can't find ratings for Clearview or Regal Cinemas through the DOH. Smaller theaters though, like the Quad and Angelika, Sunshine and Film Forum are listed but, not chains, exempt from the calorie regulations.
Has anyone been to a movie theater yet with calorie information?
Welcome New York Social Diary readers! By all means have a look around.
