Good food news for Greene Street. No, the Jersey City one.
Today was the grand opening of Pizza alla Gargiulo at 101 Greene Street. Operated by the building's owner, the owner of a local construction company, it will soon become the neighborhood's only brick oven pizzeria now that La Rustique is moving on to Jersey Avenue. Gargiulo shares the block with Iron Monkey, Telly's and the vague promise of Van Houtte Cafe. The pizzeria offers an abundance of outdoor seating - it looks more like an outdoor dining room - and an abundance of toppings - 23. They have two house special pizzas, one with sun-dried tomatoes and jalapenos another with shrimp and bacon. We find it a little odd the interior is completely flush with the neighborhood while the interior is that of any Bayonne pizzeria. The pizza too, served up by Bayonnites tastes more like the conventional pizza oven, Neopolitan style found throughout the town's near 50 pizzerias. Slices are $2.50, small pies $10, large pies $14. Hours are Monday - Friday 11am to 8pm. Phone: (201) 433-9000.
Up the block, the doors were finally opened and employees were finally inside Canadian coffee chain Van Houtte Cafe in the corner Montgomery-Greene condo tower. Just a couple months back signs went up in the window and paper up behind them, then permits and today was the first day workers have been found inside. (Did everyone get their permits today?) Maybe it'll be open before the summer's over?
