We've developed a taste for the knock-off bulgogi tacos from Seoul Station (now with pesto!) for the past two weeks since reading all the hype over their west coast inspiration the Kogi Korean taco truck in LA. Ordering off the menu with a milk soda has made for many a pleasant start to East Village evenings that end down the block with a coffee mousse from Dessert Truck. (And maybe a few rounds at Mayahuel in between.) But after a while we couldn't help but wonder how much better the real thing could be. We'll find out soon enough as lo and behold in less than a month Dessert Truck will be right beside Kogi in Rockefeller Center.
Monday, June 8th is Street & Savory, a global street food festival juxtaposing a recession theme with a gala price tag. At $600 a ticket this fundraiser for Citymeals-on-Wheels will bring out thirty mostly Manhattan chefs set to reinterpret street meat. But the Vendy Awards this is not, as only two mobile street food purveyors, Jerome Chang's Dessert Truck and Roy Choi and and Mark and Caroline Manguera's Kogi Korean BBQ-To-Go are the only meals that will be on wheels. But at the end of the day it will all be worth it just so long as Kogi's appearance isn't an elaborate ruse for another Throwdown with Bobby Flay.
